Direct Materials Category Manager

Position Purpose

The  Category Manager is responsible for leading and managing their category, suppliers and direct buying team responsible for all aspects of sourcing and procurement inclusive of: category management; supply partnerships and innovation; purchasing, coordinating and scheduling delivery for all materials and related services;  and managing SAP sourcing/material master data. Provides the insight for category management, policy and supply standards (supplier, goods and services).  Supports and partners with Sales, Marketing, New Product Development, Winery Operations, Winemaking, Vineyard Management, Supply Chain inclusive of other Category Managers, Legal, Business Services and Finance/Accounting to achieve mutual business goals

Coordinates compilation and preparation of presentations, reports and category strategy analytics inclusive of business requirements, industry trends, price drivers, spend, forecast (volume and price), innovation and supplier performance. Analysis should support  communication of progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Develops alternate sources of supply when vendors and suppliers are inadequate, such as analyzing markets and key commodities for supplier management.

  • Develops staffing needs, selects new employees, makes recommendations in job evaluation and compensation, and recommends termination actions
  • Conducts team meetings with department employees; includes monthly safety topic, ISO, DOE and other applicable training
  • Handles employee issues, concerns, and complaints in an objective and confidential manner

  • Prepares and monitors department overhead budget

Essential Duties

  • Develops, champions, and ensures implementation of ideas that will optimize total cost of ownership year-over-year for assigned spend categories according to category manager guidelines and manages supply chain risk.
  • Works with Internal customers and suppliers to improve sourcing processes inclusive of change management.
  • Contributes to the annual cost savings goal – price/freight/sales tax, supplier performance reimbursements and negotiated cost avoidance. Tracks industry trends which impact cost drivers.
  • Tracks forecasted vs actual savings for assigned Materials Category and responsible for communicating performance against these measures and their potential budgetary and Latest Estimate (LE) impact.
  • Establishes category metrics and savings targets, monitor performance, and communicate these to stakeholders.
  • For Materials Categories, creates a category specific initiative pipeline that will forecast and direct sourcing and procurement projects and sourcing activities over a 3-5 year timeframe.
  • Develops and implements commodity strategies which include business requirements, stakeholder identification, spend baseline and evolution, supply market analysis, current supplier, benchmarking and opportunities.
  • Establishes and maintains strategic relationships with suppliers to ensure successful negotiation, implementation and support.
  • Works with business unit leadership to monitor contract compliance, purchase orders and supplier transition.
  • Manages supplier performance to ensure continuity of good and services that meet the quality, service and price performance standards of the company.
  • Develops negotiation strategies and drive negotiations inclusive of exit strategies to achieve stated goals and objectives. Works closely with internal stakeholders and legal to ensure all negotiations are integrated cross-functionally for materials categories.
  • Issues RFP, receive competitive bids, analyze proposals, negotiate commercial agreements/MSA, issue purchase orders and support invoicing issues.
  • Complies with the company’s Purchasing, Contracts, Travel & Entertainment and Delegation of Authority policy and ISO procedures. Utilize company standard RFX, NDA, MSA, ISO  and other templates and playbooks.
  • Drives improvement of procurement efficiency and effectiveness throughout Delicato via process standardization and improvement.
  • Remains current with market trends through relationships with suppliers, research and market experts; identify and communicate new technologies and solutions to key problems in the assigned spend areas.
  • Leverages current and future business requirements, market intelligence, and historical spend to develop innovative category strategies that drive cost reduction, enterprise consistency, and business value.
  • Provides category specific subject matter expertise and insights to internal clients and regular status updates of all projects to leadership. Provides team development on materials technology opportunity.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, Delicato safety and insurance requirements as well as any internal policies or procedures to ensure that your behavior exhibits the highest level of integrity, honesty, and transparency. Maintains appropriate documentation to comply with ISO and Purchasing Policy.

Essential Duties Continued:

  • Collaborates effectively across different organizational levels, functions, businesses, and geographies to realize procurement goals and objectives. Acts as change agent and implement change management to deliver value with S&S initiatives.
  • Supports Buyers to purchase specified materials and services at optimum prices/quantities, terms, conditions , and quality to ensure the best value for business and customers as required. Provides leadership for purchase price variance (PPV) monthly analysis and invoice issue resolution. Ensure all PO’s are supported by contract, approved e-requisition or manual approval per DOA policy. Track and monitor receipts and spending for approval limits. Maintain documentation.
  • Ensures purchasing coordinator maintains accuracy of master data information in SAP ECC with assigned commodities and supplier Inclusive of pricing.
  • Supports Buyers with Prompt review, follow up, and expedite delivery of orders and QC concerns.
  • Responsible for managing material returns, quality, price variance resolution,  availability problems and resolving accounting/invoicing issues.
  • Provides accurate volume/pricing forecasts communications to suppliers and internal customers for key category purchases to ensure continuity of supply. Work closely with SC planning for monthly forecasting process accuracy and reconciliation.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience

College degree required. 8+ years direct or related experience in Supply Chain, Purchasing, Procurement and/or Sourcing

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience working with large financial ERP Systems (SAP, JDE, etc.) and automated purchasing tools and strong skills in Microsoft Office suite tools.
  • Proven negotiation skills.
  • Must have advanced sourcing, procurement and purchasing skills, i.e. category management, negotiations, strategic sourcing, cost modeling and supplier relations.
  • Experience dealing cross-functionally with multiple functions across the organization and supply chain.
  • Self-motivated with high energy for business process improvement.
  • Possess excellent analytical, problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Must have good communication skills- influential and highly collaborative. Must be able to implement processes and decisions while maintaining relationships with customers in other functional groups.
  • Demonstrated strength of character and ability to excel in a challenging and changing environment during periods of rapid growth. Expertise with simplifying complex and ambiguous problems.
  • Has high level of integrity and interpersonal communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Ethically work with existing suppliers and potential suppliers to ensure their fair treatment.
  • Ability to travel and split time between the Napa and Manteca office.
