Lab Analyst

Work Location Delicato Vineyards Manteca 

Position Purpose

Under general supervision, the Lab Analyst is responsible for performing analysis to support wine quality. Following standard operating procedures, the Lab Analyst utilizes wet-bench chemistry, analytical instrumentation and performs data entry. This role is also responsible for calibration and troubleshooting of analytical instrumentation. 

Functional Responsibility

Essential Duties

  • Performs chemical analysis of grapes, juice, fermenters, and wine following standard operating procedures and protocols
  • Operates laboratory instruments such as auto titrators, infrared analyzers, turbidimeter, density meter, Atomic Emission Spectroscopy, and other technical instruments
  • Performs limited lab equipment troubleshooting
  • Prepares wine for bottling and/or shipping by making adjustments to meet specifications
  • Performs data entry using various types of applications Continuously audits analytical data
  • Maintains Data Integrity and Impartiality
  • Participates in timely data entry and routine analysis
  • Reports analytical accuracy issues to Analytical Lab Manager
  • Executes wine fining trials
  • Continuously audits analytical data utilizing statistical quality tools to measure process capability
  • Prepares certificates of analysis
  • Analyzes grapes for smoke taint analysis on GC/MS-QQQ (specific to Manteca location)
  • Monitors and documents inventory lab supplies
  • Maintains ISO 9001,  ISO 17025, FSCC22000  compliance within the lab (specific to Manteca location)
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization utilizing 5S within the lab
  • Participates in blend evaluations, tasting panels and sensory projects
  • Maintains a strong customer service relationship with internal customers
  • Samples juice/wine from barrels and tanks
  •  Assists with Harvest Intern training
  • Participates in method validation projects
  • Pulls samples from tanks as necessary

 

Duties specific to Alba Coast role:

  • Supports Delicato Monterey Winery analysis

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Enology, Food Science, Biology, or other related science field
  • 6+ months experience in a laboratory setting

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of good laboratory skills including sample and reagent preparation, sample handling, and good record keeping
  • Strong communication and organization skills
  • Works well independently and in a team environment 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Ability to prioritize work while adapting to changing priorities
  • Brings a positive work environment

Working Conditions

  • Analytical lab in a temperature-controlled environment
  • Required to drive automotive vehicle or equipment; Central Coast Lab Analyst is required to drive between the Alba Coast and Monterey Wineries
  • Indoor and outdoor environment with exposure to the elements/temperature variations
  • Exposure to weather-related temperature & humidity extremes
  • Extended Hours
  • Shift Rotation
  • Required to wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
  • Must be able to pass fit test and perform work while wearing respirators
  • Work at protected heights of 50’
  • Work in close quarters or confined spaces
  • Exposure to varying levels of dust, chemicals, fumes, gases, and noisy equipment 
  • Occasionally may be required to lift and carry cases of wine
  • May need to determine color, taste and smell of wine using eyes, tongue, and nose

It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role.
