Analytical Instrumentation Specialist

Position Purpose

This position will fulfill the role of an analytical instrumentation specialist in the Analytical Lab Team of Delicato Family Vineyards. The specialist will be required to apply analytical sciences to address chemical problem-solving efforts, using new and established methods. The position requires knowledge of instrumentation methods, generation of data, analysis and interpretation of data with a goal of understanding sample properties and ensuring accurate data is being generated. This position will operate and support maintenance and calibration of analytical instruments. Ultimately the specialist will continue to develop and expand operational skills, knowledge of instrumental techniques and help improve our lab capabilities.

Essential Duties

  • Develop analytical methods on existing and future lab equipment, including validation and testing in an effort to support the Analytical Lab and Winemaking programs from grape to wine analysis
  • Work within ISO-9001 and FSSC 22000 regulations and assure ongoing documentation and compliance
  • Be responsible for preventative maintenance, service agreements and certification of all equipment
  • Troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance and calibrations of all equipment
  • Ensure other Delicato Labs are following the Preventative Maintenance and Calibration calendar
  • Ensure that timely and accurate data is being reported from all equipment
  • Maintain the in-house Delicato Control Sample program
  • Regularly report work status and prepare written reports on work performed
  • Cooperatively work with customers in other departments such as Winemaking, Cellar, Compliance and QC
  • Train others in laboratory techniques and the use of laboratory equipment. Shows a willingness to teach as well as be taught

Non-Essential Duties

  • Participate in blend evaluations, tasting panels and sensory projects.
  • Pull samples from tanks as necessary.

Minimum Requirements

 Education and Experience

  • BS in chemistry, biochemistry or an equivalent major
  • 5+ years in an analytical chemistry lab

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Prior experience with analytical method development and qualification/validation of projects
  • Hands-on experience with GC method development.
  • Hands-on experience with GC-MS trace analysis using headspace SPME
  • Hands-on experience on multiple analytical instruments for chemical and biological compounds, such as IR, HPLC, UV-Vis, pH meter, Autotitrator, GC-MS
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in writing reports and analytical methods
  • Team player with ability to positively communicate with team members
  • Experience in the wine industry is a plus, but not required
