Position Purpose

Under General Supervision from the Director of Winemaking, this position provides technical support to the winemaker and is a back up to the Lab tech position. This position works closely with the luxury winemaking team at DMW during the harvest season.

Functional Responsibility

  • Provides hands-on support, assigns daily tasks, monitors output, and communicates changes to the team
  • Informs shift supervisor of manpower needs
  • Assigns and monitors employee rest and meal breaks; covers accordingly
  • Identifies employee training needs and follows through to accomplish the desired results
  • Ensures employees use proper protective equipment and have a safe work environment
  • Enforces company policies, practices, and safety programs; advises Shift Supervisor of policy infractions
  • Provides timely feedback to employees on a daily basis and informs Shift Supervisor of team/individual performance; may participate in employee evaluations
  • Brings suggestions for facility, equipment, and process improvements to the attention of Shift Supervisor
  • Follows-up on jobs to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Troubleshoots and resolves equipment/procedural issues and informs Shift Supervisor of faulty equipment
  • Advises shift supervisor of needed work orders, red tags equipment, and makes notation on turnover log to advise the next shift
  • Ensures all employees have the proper tools and equipment to successfully carry out assignments
  • Ensures team members communicate in a clear and effective manner during turnover and throughout the day for smooth workflow
  • Keeps work area organized and clean to prevent safety hazards

Essential Duties

  • Reviews lab analysis on grapes, juice and wine at various stages of production
  • Provides back up to the lab tech, including “trouble shooting” of procedures / instruments
  • Performs quality checks in the winery such as tank top and barrel room inspections
  • Participates in assembling and implementation of winemaking plans for the luxury winemaking area
  • Assists in blend development
  • Working with the R&D Winemaker, will help support all R&D trials.
    • Assist in coordination of sensory tastings.
    • Prepares reports and presents research findings to key stakeholders.
  • Performs administrative tasks, such as assembling bottle approval packets and other duties as assigned
  • Performs quality control checks for bottling activities at DMW
  • Participates and carries out research and development projects in the winery
  • Sets up and monitors micro-oxygenation equipment on wine in tanks

Non-Essential Duties

  • Participates in sales and marketing events
  • Assists with vineyard visits and evaluations

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience

  • B.S. in Fermentation Science or related field and 1 year of Wine Lab and Winemaking experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent wine sensory skills, communication skills, and organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word). Proficient in desktop application (MS preferred)
  • Strong analytical skills. Works effectively with numbers, spreadsheets and detail

Working Conditions

  • Most activities take place in lab, office or  winery environment.  During harvest season many vineyard visits can take place when the outside temperature is 90-100F.
